N. 27 Due Monday Dec 2 OPEN TOPIC

COMMENT:

Two separate paragraphs:

1) Looking back at all the materials we covered in class, is there any topic that you still find relevant in today's culture?

2) What is the single most intriguing small detail that made an impression and that probably only you noticed (both in lectures and course materials)?

DON'T forget to COMMENT on n. 26.

  1. 1. One topic relevant in today's culture is the climate changing. Venice is a city built on the water and due to frequent floods because of climate change many artifacts that could only be found in the homes and buildings of Venice are being destroyed. This is relevant because in today's society climate change is a big discussion among many world leaders as it causes many difficulties in their countries. It happens to be that Venice is suffering significantly more because of its location.

    2. One detail I found to be important is that all the people we have studied became even more valuable and famous after they had passed away. Their works or art and literature have increased in value and are things to see in museums because of who they were created by. Yes, they were praised in their time but now they have become more of a bigger deal because of the story and mysteries surrounding their life and work.

  2. 1) Not to be rhetoric but everything we've discussed in class is still relevant today. Even our class discussions are proof of that. There is also the reasoning that all of the history we covered is immortalized in museums and databasesses that are still studied by professionals to this day.One topic in particular is homosexuality in olden times versus now. Those apposed to it in the past and in current times take the same stance in saying that God forbids it.
2)One intriguing detail i noticed when talking about purgatory is the concept of american prisons. In purgatory you are put in levels with people that commited the same sins as you. In the american jail system its the same case, you are put into cells and parts of the jail complex with others who have commited the same or similar offense. Are the people in charge of american correctional facilities trying to mimic purgatory so to keep prisoners from coming back for another offense?

  3. A topic relevant in today's culture is concern over the effects of climate change. Since we talked about Venice and the floods they experienced recently, it comes to my attention all cities on the coastline will be the first and most affected. Should things proceed as they are, all that would be left of cities like Venice are underwater ruins.

There was a small detail of note I found when reading up on Leonardo da Vinci. I made note of this in the most recent quiz that his reasoning for his writing methods are all just theories, with no proven confirmation. The three most commonly accepted, while they could all be correct, I feel as though there is still something missing in order to understand why he did what he did.

  4. 1) A topic that I find relevant is the climate change that is affecting Venice and other parts of the world. Because Venice is a city filled with various types of very old and new art, you don't really expect floods etc to take such a left turn on things. However, it seems that the city of art and wealth is just as immune to floods and climate change as any other part of the world.

    2) One detail I found intriguing is when we learned about purgatory, because I actually never learned too in depth about it. I found the levels of hell and the types of sins according to those levels very interesting simply because most of the sins listed on there is common in today's culture.

  5. 1) Climate change is the most important topic that we went over in class. It impacts not only humans but animals as well. Temperatures rising up and down will affect our food sources and in turn damage the economy.

    2) The most interesting fact for me was how the Egyptians were so advanced for a civilization without modern technology. They were able to build pyramids with precision without cranes or modern planning.

  6. 1) I think that the way people let love overpower them and affect their judgement is still relevant in todays society. It is important to discuss because people can be very affected even today.
    2) The most interesting fact was how plays were extremely different in the past and how body language can make up for verbal language

  7. 1. I think Michelangelo’s sexuality was a relevant topic because people today still find it hard to find acceptance. Whether it be from oneself or from others.

    2. What I found interesting from this class and the course materials was Dante’s inferno. It was interesting to learn about the different categories of hell and how they were sorted by

  8. Many topics that we discussed in class ares still relevant today. Dante's circles of hell are constantly being referenced. I even recently saw a movie where people were talking about it. Leonardo's creations will forever be relevant because he created manny inventions that we still use today. Because of him we have airplanes and military tanks and many more things that improve and help our society.

Besides learning about all the things that Leonardo created. I always find it interesting how all the art, sculptures and inventions that many artist and scientist came up with only became popular and acknowledged after their death. So many scientific breakthrough's could of happened if people did not automatically assume that artist, scientists and philosophers were crazy and did not know what they were talking about. Because for example Michelangelo and Leonardo were very smart and advanced for their period but they did not have a chance to prove it. Now we still study their work and wonder of all the mysterious and subliminal messages they might of left behind.

  9. A lot of the famous works and inventions or Michelangelo and Leonardo are still being worshiped and used in today's world, even after centuries later.
One detail that I found interesting is that even in today's modern civilization, people still believe myths and stories to be true, like the blood of San Genaro bringing good luck.

  10. 1)Looking back on this semester, there were several interesting things that were covered in class. From the necessity of taking classes relevant to our majors and to more modern events such as voting in Italy which will remain as future issues in the world.
    2) One small detail that made an impression on me in the course has been the different types of art forms there were in the past. When we learned about commedia del' arte it was both fascinating and confusing. Now, people mostly wear costumes or masks to perform as a character. While in the past, it was much more personal such as concealing identities.

  11. I found it interesting how religion effected the opinions and personalities of people from the Dante's Inferno era. I thin it is interesting how people can completely devote themselves to an idea of a people/entity and persecute other based on said belief.
One thing that stood out to me was the hoopla surrounding the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. Do not get me wrong, works of art in our world’s history are precious and deserve praise but it makes me think about the “abstract” works that are generated today and placed in museums on the same level as i.e Mona. Are they really great works of art that require great emphasis or just plainly what we see? When I see a painting of a bowl of fruit, what makes this bowl of fruit so spectacular then the one in my kitchen or the one on the grocery flyer? Just something to think about; just because there is hype around a work doesn't necessarily mean it is warranted.

  12. 1) I think that Decameron could still be relevant to today's society. It argues what actions could be considered to be acceptable and that each person is responsible for their action.

    2) One detail I found to be intriguing was how there was a constant reinventions of stories. Oral stories evolves as it pass from each person and written stories were added on and integrated with the author's own thought.

  13. People are still faced with emotional events that center around greed, pride and desire.
I found the personality of Michelangelo very interesting since I knew about his work but never realized how disturbed he was in his personal life.

  14. 1. I think all of what we discuss in class is relevant today. For example, many of Leonardo's inventions on weaponry were used in World War II. Michelangelo's sexuality and finding himself is very relevant today. People still find it impossible to find themselves in this day and age.
    2. When learning about Michelangelo we learned discussed the Statue of David. As a jew, I always find it interesting when others are as fascinated about the Bible as I am.
