One topic that we discussed in lecture is how "men are stupid". I responded to this by saying that in many cases when it comes to love, there are aspects that make it harder to make rational choices. I think that some people have a hard time knowing their worth, and therefore may appear stupid. I think stupid is not the right word, I think it has more to do with self-respect and knowing your self worth.
ReplyDeleteAnother topic we discussed is how people do crazy things for attention. One thing that was mentioned was about the crazy guy that puts swords down his throat. What was even more disturbing was the guy that swallowed frogs and would throw them up. I think that throughout time, what society finds funny is changing a lot. I personally find this type of presentation disturbing and not amusing or funny.
A topic that I found interesting was that the norm of the time, which was to have male protagonist characters but Goldoni chose to have female protagonists. He portrayed issues that people dealt with on a daily basis but amplified it. His play Mistress of the Inn, revolved around the innkeeper, Mirandolina.
ReplyDeleteAlso Golden chose to focus on the wit of the innkeeper rather than portraying her in a dark evil character, which supports what Marissa said in her comment that it portrayed that "men are stupid" and a lot of men at the time lost their wealth due to stupid decisions whether it was due to the emergence of card games or pursuing a women.

DeleteOne issue that was spoken in class in the last lecture is how being part of the arts (acting, painting, ect..) in the past was not seen as a notable profession. Thus, many actors in the commedia dell'Arte would conceal their identity by wearing masks as they performed. I think it's interesting because this issue still applies in today's society in which many parents pressure their children to follow a path other than the arts .
ReplyDeleteA second issue that was briefly explored in class is of the recent events in Venice . The flooding which is caused by Venice's geography and the fact that the sea level is rising . It's also concerning as global warming is a contributing factor to the flooding meaning that humans can help prevent the likelihood of possible floods.
One of the issues we talked about in class on Nov 20 was about whats happening in Venice. How it has been flooding and and probably will continue to flood because of the climate change and high tides. Venice is build on water so its easy for the water to rise and over flow Venice. I personally am not surprised that Venice is flooding because of how it's build everything is on water. So its funny how climate change is the first to blame for weeks of flooding.
ReplyDeleteThe other issue we talked about in class was about the guy who swallowed frogs and would put knifes in his throat. I thought that was pretty crazy and usual. I did not know it was possible to swallow an entire frog and then choke it out and for it to still be alive that insane. I kind of want to see how he does it because its very fascinating.
One thing we discussed in class on the 20th was how in the play "La Locandiera" the main theme was how men are dumb when they fall in love. I found this interesting because it makes sense in how some people act when they start dating people. It is a kind of euphoria. The second thing we talked about was how Venice is slowly disappearing. The flood waters are increasing because of climate change which dangers the art and architecture of a 1300 year old city. This is the sad reality and one example of how climate change is very harmful in today's life.
ReplyDeleteI do remember this and was laughing practically at my self. I feel like the theme of men/women being dumb in love has been a theme in literature as long as literature has existed.
Deleteone thing that we talked about in class on nov 20th was the reason for constructing Venice. It was meant to be a safe haven to get away from raiders. Its built upon a marsh on many sandbars, and the old wooden stilts that support the structures have been petrified over the many years that Venice has been there.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing we discussed was the level that actors where at. In our discussion the professor said that actors where basically on the same level of prostitutes. Because of this women weren't actors due to the loss of the ability to be a meaningful life and so they wouldn't tarnish their name.
