N. 28 Due Dec 5 Pinocchio

COMMENT

TWO SEPARATE PARAGRAPH

1)   Choose one episode (scene, accident) in the plot, starting from the very beginning of the book and describe it briefly.

Each student will read the previous episodes reported and will add a new one. The episodes must follow the order in which they appear in the book. You cannot go back to a previous episode / page.
For instance, if the sequence of comments arrived at the Red Lobster Inn, the next comment cannot go back to Mangiafuoco.

2) Pick what you consider a most disturbing scene in the book. Summarize it in one line and EXPLAIN why you chose this particular scene. Does it have to do with your fears as a child? Or your sensitivity to a particular situation (ex. you are scared of angry people; irresponsible people; cruelty; taking advantage of others...)

  2. 1. In Chapter 1 of the book, the opening scene is about Mastro Cherry who is planning to make a leg of a table out of a piece of wood. When he is about to start carving it and hitting it with the hatchet, he hears a voice telling him to not hit so hard. He is shocked and does not understand where the voice is coming from. After looking around he begins to assume that he was just imagining it. When he applies a blow to the wood, the voice says that Mastro Cherry hurt it again. He is so shocked at hearing the voice again and starts to get very angry. He then hits and throws the log all over the ceiling and floor. After he does not hear the voice for a while, he assumes he was just imaging it, so he gets out a tool to make the wood smooth, when he hears the tiny voice again telling him to stop tickling. This time he was so shocked that he fell over and when he opened his eyes, his face was a different color (even the tip of his nose).
    2. "He beat the water with his paws to hold himself up, but the harder he tried the deeper he sank. As he stuck his head out once more, the poor fellow's eyes were bulging and he barked out wildly..." (Chapter 28) This line is from when the dog is chasing Pinocchio and is unable to stop before he gets to the water and starts to drown. This was one of the most disturbing scenes for me in the book. The reason I chose this is because I am very sensitive to animals being harmed because ever since I was younger I always loved animals and hated seeing them get hurt. Even though the dog was chasing Pinocchio, I think that the graphic details about his eyes bulging was upsetting. I am glad that he ends up getting saved. I do not think this would be an appropriate scene in a children's book today, and many would find it too disturbing for really young children.

  3. Chapter 2.
Gipetto finds Maestro Antonio was on the floor teaching the ants their ABC's . Geppetto asks for a peice of wood so he can make a marionette. Antonio asks what will he do with it when he is done, Geppetto responds that he will take it around the world to earn a crust of bread and a cup of wine. Geppetto hears a small voice that says "Bravo Polendina"! Geppetto asked why did you insult me? They go back and forth and begin to fight as they both became angry. They both hit and slap and fight eachother, They finally break up Geppetto and Antonio has the others wig. They return each their wigs and made up. Geppetto asks for a peice of wood to make a marionette, Antonio went to get the piece of wood which had frightened him, the piece of wood slipped out of his hand and hit Geppetto's thin legs. They both begin to fight again calling eachother names after Geppetto accuses Antonio of throwing the pice of wood at him on purpose. After a second fight, they settled their dispute by thrashing one another and swore to be good friends for the rest of their lives. Antonio gives Geppetto the piece of wood and heads home.

    2) Well right here we see a disturbing scene in the form of physical violence between two people in a children's book is unheard of by today's standards.

  4. In chapter 4, when Pinocchio was running away from home, he encounters a talking cricket. The cricket warns him that if he continues his irresponsible behavior, he will turn into a donkey. In anger, Pinocchio throws a hammer and kills the cricket.

The most disturbing chapter was when Pinocchio was hanged on the giant oak tree and left for dead. Any scene of someone being hanged would traumatize children.

  5. 1) In Chapter 6, Pinocchio was roaming the streets looking for food. He ends up finding a man who tells him to stand under his window and hold out a hat, which Pinocchio does not have, and ends up drenching him in water because he thought Pinocchio was just one of those boys who rings people's doorbells late at night just for fun. Pinocchio then goes home confused, upset and still hungry. He ends up falling asleep with his feet on the stove because he was trying to dry off, only to wake up and find his feet were burned to ashes.

    2) I think a disturbing chapter was Chapter 15, where the Assassins capture Pinocchio and hang him from a tree. I think it is disturbing to see them try to kill a child just for money. They watched him suffer and kick around for 3 hours before giving up and leaving for the night.

  6. 1) In chapter 7, Geppetto returns home from the prison. Pinocchio has burnt his foot so he wasn't able to open the door for him. Geppetto jumps into the house from the window and sees Pinocchio lying on the floor. he picked him up and started crying. Pinocchio tells him the whole story from last night and lies about why he killed the cricket. However, the only thing Geppetto remembered was that Pinocchio is hungry ad for that matter he offered three pears to him, which were for his own breakfast.
    2) The disturbing chapter was where the fox and cat stole his coins and he went to jail for that. The fox and cat took advantage of Pinocchio.

  7. 1) In chapter 8, Pinocchio promised Geppetto that he would be a good boy and go to school when Geppetto questioned why he should remake his leg if he would ran away in the future again. Geppetto was moved and remade his leg, along with a suit of clothes on Pinocchio's request. However, they did not have the money to buy him an ABC book. Geppetto decided to sell his coat to buy him the ABC book despite the cold weather.

    2) A disturbing scene in the book was when the farmer decided to use Pinocchio as a replacement for his dog as a punishment for him trying to steal the farmer's grapes. The scene portray the idea that a person could punish another however they want and even made them lose their worth as a human.

  8. 1) in chapter 7 geppetto and pinocchio make a deal where pinocchio will be a good boy and go to school only if geppetto remakes his burnt feet. Geppetto sells his jacket as a sacrifice to buy pinocchio a school book.
2)When they each get eaten by a shark, this scene was particularly scary because ever since i was a kid i have always had the irrational fear that when im swimming in a open body of water that a shark is gonna come from beneath me and eat me.

  9. 1) Chapter 9, Pinocchio heads out to go to school but instead distracted by the sound of pipes ends up at the Marionette Theater where he sells his ABC book to get admission. He skips school and uses the 4 pennies to watch the show overlooking what he promised his father.
    2) It is odd but I thought the scene when Pinocchio kills the old wise cricket was very cruel since he seemed so indifferent towards it. He seemed very cold and it isn't a trait I see often in kids so young.
