N. 13 - More about sin and punishment

You should all read the comments and replies in n. 12. Some are a bit long, so here is a quicker way:

COMMENT  --  Break down your answer in two paragraphs, using 1) and 2) to clearly distinguish between the two.

1) Start naming the sin you chose for n. 12. Describe in a few words Dante's punishment and write the name of one of the sinners.

2) Describe the punishment you would like to inflict for this sin, trying to make the punishment fit the sin, as Dante does with his "contrappasso" logic (you can recycle what you wrote in n. 12, if it works.)  For contrappasso, click here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrapasso

  1. I chose the sin of Treachery. Satan, Judas, and Brutas were in this ninth circle. Dante's punishment was that the betrayers of special relationships are frozen in a lake of ice. I guess if I were to follow the Dante's contrappasso logic then I would have the sinner constantly betrayed by those closest to them and be stuck in this constant betrayal from everyone.

  2. 1) I chose the sin of Gluttony in post number 12. Sinners such as Ciacco lie in an icy paste while Cerberus (the one who guards over them) devours and tears them apart.

    2) My punishment still involves Cerberus consuming the sinners, but is slightly different. Similar to how pigs are fatten to be put in meat grinders, the sinners will be fed food until they are plump enough for the grinder, which they will be inserted while “alive” and grinded down into chow for Cerberus to eat on.

  3. 1) I chose Judas in Treachery. He stuck, frozen in ice, unable to speak while being eaten by Satan.
    2) As I wrote in 12, I would have them continually be betrayed by the people they trust the most and are close to.

  4. 1) I chose the sin of the wrathful and sullen. Dantes punishment for these sinners were that they would attack one another in the Styx and the sullen are forever buried in the stinking waters of Styx chanting the same words in the rhythm of a hymn, Dante condemned Filippo Argenti into this sin.
    2) My punishment would still involve the idea of isolation and mental torture where they would experience all the different kinds of death and still be alive.

  5. 1) I chose the sin of "false counselors" in the eighth circle of Dante's Inferno. Their punishment is to be hidden from the view inside flames. Ulysses is found here.

2)A punishment I will give these sinners is no sleep and continuous talking/singing in a freezing room. They will be told that they will be set free tomorrow but the promise will be broken giving them a taste of their medicine by falsifying the statement.

  6. 1). I chose the sin of Gluttony, the 3rd circle of Dante's Inferno. The punishment is to be forced to live in vile, freezing slush guarded by ceberus.

2). A punishment I'd give is to make them constantly starved, and only allowed to eat the vile filth around them, only to just stay starved.

  7. I chose the sin for the Heretics, violence towards God by denying immorality from the 6th circle. Dante's punishment was to eternally live in a grave of flames. Guido Cavalcanti, Dante's best friend, is the most memorable sinner of this circle.

My alternative punishment was basically what is known as modern day solitary confinement. That way the just have an eternally period of time to think about their beliefs and run themselves mad in eternal isolation.

  8. 1.) At first when I was doing the assignment I chose the 8th circe which was lust. I did not find it surprising at all that Cleopatra was one of the characters in that circle. But since it said no repeated answers are allowed and circle 8 was chosen I was left with Limbo which is the 1st circle. Homer, Ovid, Lucan and Horace are the characters Dante put in that circle.
Their punishment is that they have no hope.

2.) Because I think its unfair that people in Limbo are not really sinners they either lived before Christ or were not very religious my punishment for them would be reliving their worst day over and over. It might seem as not very harsh of punishment but can make someone go crazy.

  9. 1.To me, the most intriguing circle has to be number eight of the seducers and panderers. It is the first section in the large grouping of sinners in circle eight. From what I have gathered from its location, these sins have to be one of the worst. The people under the section of seducers and panderers are subject to a not so severe punishment in my opinion. These people are forced to walk while being chased by demons in a never ending hell. Due to the fact that their crime is so severe, a harsher punishment should be put into place.

2.That being said, the punishment should fit the crime. If any violence should have occurred when they had committed the sin, the same violence should inflicted to that person. However, if there was no violence, they should have visions of their closest friend/family member enduring the same thing as the victim of the person they violated. Like I said, the punishment should fit the crime and this definitely would.

  10. The circle in Dante's inferno that I found most interesting was the 6th circle. Those who commit the sin of heresy, meaning they contradict the aspects of a major religion (ex.Christianity). A political leader from Dante’s era who is considered a Heretic in the Sixth Circle of Hell, is Farinata. His intense obsession with Florentine politics and opposing ideas from Dante put him to the 6th circle. Punishment for heretics included getting burned in flaming tombs.

The punishment that I would inflict on those who commit this sin would defiantly not be as intense. I do not believe that having an opposing religion is something that should make someone suffer. If anything I would take away something from them or give them less opportunity than others based on their opposing beliefs. In other words, those who do not follow the major religion would be prevented from things that bring certain pleasures, that others would have access to. (This would be if I had to pick a punishment, but I really believe that this isn't considered a sin and people have the right to believe in something different than the majority believe in.
