10. "Best practice" example

Here is a model answer from one of you classmates, taken from the Sept 23 assignment.

" Jacopone’s lauda struck me as fascinating because, throughout the whole piece, I was waiting for the moment the poem would shift into a more positive note but I was actually pleased when it didn’t happen.
Jacopone used the cliché of anguish and penance in a new way, many poets that would write a poem like this would have to, before finalizing, turn it around somehow. Instead, this poet goes even farther, stating that the pains he mentions are not even enough as they are.

Another thing that amazed me about the poem was that, despite not many people being well-read in medicine or bodily ailments at the time, Jacopone is obviously not one of them. His expressiveness in coming up with more gradually worse sicknesses to be ravaged by actually shows this isn’t any literate man. This is a scholar with heavy martyr complex that knows how to make his work of torments elevate the reader to even empathize his reverence to God."
COMMENT:   Which aspect of this comment deals more directly with the READER'S RESPONSE? Which other aspects are "textual analysis?"

REPLY: find a comment you disagree with and give your reasons. The disagreement can be about a very subtle point. Indeed, the more subtle the better.

  1. The aspect of the comment that deals more directly with the readers response is the beginning when the reader was struck that the poem did not shift in the more positive direction the more it went on. The reader also pointed out that many people were not well read in medicine back then and that that's why the author of the poem continued with talking about worse sicknesses.

The aspects that were textual analysis is when the reader talked about the authors poem and how his expressiveness showed that we he was not very literate. When I read the poem for the first time I did not notice that at all. I think I was way to focused on the context of the poem to pay attention to that. The reader pointed out so many textual analysis I did not catch. I did not even think that you had to be well read in medicine. The poem is way deeper more respectful to God than I thought. I think as someone who does not read a lot of poetry it is very easy for me to miss or not understand the message.

    1. I agree that I too did not delve into the poet's expressiveness to be a sign of his lack of literacy. I do not read poetry often as well but I would see deeper meanings in songs which is essentially the same thing. I wonder why that is.

  2. The idea about the "reader's response" is at the beginning of the the writing where this person states that:he/she was struck by the fact that the poem did not gradually shift to a positive not but instead stayed negative for the entire time. As well as the point about how people were not greatly versed in medicine back then, therefore is the reason why it was talked about greatly.

The idea of "textual analyis" is the way the poet was describing everything and was not very detailed about it. The reader seems to think that this is because the poet is not that literate. I disagree with the statement by the person. I believe that the poem was written in a specific manner on purpose and not because the person was illiterate.

  3. The writer first goes into detail about how Jacopone's poem was strictly about anguish and nothing more even though they expected the tone to change. They thought it would because of the cliche in modern works of art where there is almost always a happy ending. I would consider this their general reaction/response to the prose.

As far as their analysis of the poem, the writer delved deeper into how Jacopone conveyed his literary intelligence through his expressiveness and whether or not he was using it to further glorifying God.

  4. The starting of first paragraph of this writing is the reader's response where the person states his/her reaction to the initial Jacopone's poem as fascinating. Also, the start of second paragraph is also reader's response since it revolves around writer's analysis of the whole poem regardless of the text itself. Writer mentioned some facts about illiteracy in the time period this poem was written to start of his/her reaction and then dived into the textual analysis.
The ending of second paragraph is more in depth analysis of the text in the poem. The writer summarized the whole concept described by Jacopone in the poem.
