I am not sure I can call myself an intellectual. I think the better question is: What is an “intellectual”? If an intellectual is someone with expertise in their field of choice, then attaining that is the very reason why I am attending college. However, people define “intellectual” differently. Some people may think I am not an intellectual even if I completed my education and obtained my degree. What is the pinnacle of knowledge that being an intellectual requires? Just because someone has a bachelor's or even a master's degree, does that alone make them an intellectual? Where does one set the bar and even if you achieve your goal, does it end there and should it end there?
What comes to mind is the Norse god Odin, who amasses knowledge by any means necessary. He cared little for morals, his reputation, even his wellbeing if it means gaining valuable experience. He isn’t like modern interpretations (Marvel Cinematic Universe/comics) would paint him to be: an honorable wise older man. Can he be recognized an intellectual, considering that?
Since the direct meaning of Intellectual means a person who appeals to or engages the intellect. Also, an intellectual refers to a person of superior mind. Do I see my self as an intellectual? My answer is no because I do not see myself as having a superior mind as there is always something to learn and discover about any subject that occupies the mind.
The making of an intellectual does not begin or end with formal education. Intellectualism is a perpetual and personal discovery of knowledge beyond what is considered normal. I believe that an intellectual is inside of all of us in varying degrees and forms. So with that said, I guess I am a little intellectual and so are you.
An intellectual person is a person whose able to use their mind to form true conclusions. In my mind an intellectual person is someone who has a lot of knowledge about various subjects and is always learning more. I don't see myself as an intellectual person far from it. I think I'm the product of the 5 min university concept.
I don't think a persons intellect is based upon what Ivy League they have graduated from. I personally believe that an intellectual person is someone that is well aware of the capabilities of the human mind and is good at doing their utmost to expand their knowledge. When I think of an intellect I usually think of a monk or a Sufi.
