I read your comments to the previous post (n. 5) with a great deal of attention and interest.
(By the way, credit goes to Azra for writing the paragraph about Sarducci.)
One major theme emerged:
colleges test memory rather than intelligence (Maira used the term "knowledge" instead of intelligence, and I think it is probably a better choice.)

COMMENT: here is the challenge for you: go over your notes for class and the materials posted in the lectures. Come up with TWO prompts/questions for the upcoming quiz that test knowledge and UNDERSTANDING rather than memorization.
Your questions must be original, in the sense that you cannot keep asking the same things over and over -- which means you must read all the posts before yours to avoid repetition.
REPLY: read carefully the questions/prompts by the classmate who posted immediately before you. Pick one, copy it and explain the reason of your choice.

ReplyDeleteThis interesting NPR radio show discusses Muslim countries trying to once again become leaders in science. It is interesting to note that Muslims were ahead of space exploration by the brilliant use and advancement of technology in the middle ages. They have made advancements in observation instruments such as the Astrolabe. What is interesting to note is that if islamic countries were to explore space and once again become leaders in technology they will need to collaborate with one another as well as other countries. This region has been under tension for a very long period of time and this endeavor will have its challenges. Hopefully this will help strengthen bonds and facilitate peace.
ReplyDeleteWhat are some reasons why the local languages that derive from Latin have been drifting? Why are they considered mutually incomprehensible?
ReplyDeleteHow does language create unity and division? How have you experienced this in your own life?
"What is interesting to note that if Islamic countries were to explore space and once again become leaders in technology, they will need to collaborate with one another as well as other countries"
I think that this section is a good point to bring up how countries often depend on others in other to succeed. This leads into how different countries supply different aspects in terms of advancements in certain areas. Overall, countries coming together is the root to success in terms of economy and advancement in the world.
Why during the Renaissance era they decided to portray paintings of Jesus different than years prior?
ReplyDeleteWhy did Italy not get rid of Latin after the fall of Roman Empire?
"how countries often depend on others in other to succeed. This leads into how different countries supply different aspects in terms of advancements in certain areas."
I thought that the first part had a good point on how countries depend on one another to succeed. This was true centuries ago and its still true today. Countries need one another for support and success. If we don't have good relationship with other counties than our economy can fall apart and we got an enemy. I think its important for presidents over the years to travel and talk with presidents from foreign countries, that shows that we respect each other and are reliable if we need to work together in the future.
“Why did Italy not get rid of Latin after the fall of Roman Empire?”
DeleteI chose this question because it is more appealing to me based what we discussed in class on languages and dialects. I think this can be answered with little memorization.
1.How does Italy’s geography contribute to the multiple dialects used there?
ReplyDelete2.Why are the Fasces (Roman bundle of sticks) used as a symbol outside it’s place of origin such as the United States?
I choose Alexander's first question because geography is often omitted in the curriculum for American students, even when it would offer us a better understanding as to why certain things exist in nature of culture. For example, people have studied the stroke belt to account for the abundance of this affliction and what common denominator the region shares, others have studied geography of Italy from it's rigid alps to its valleys to understand the divergence of its languages.
DeleteWhat are different ways people get by without knowing the Lingua Franca?
ReplyDeleteOut of the many languages that derive from Latin, is there one that particularly stands out among others?
"Countries need one another for support and success. If we don't have good relationship with other counties than our economy can fall apart and we got an enemy."
This part stood out to me because we connect language to our economy. In order to communicate with one another we need a Lingua Franca. For example, English is considered a market language. It is a Lingua Franca which helps people in power from different countries to communicate and build relationships with one another.

DeleteA good two asks would be:
ReplyDelete"Why have Romance languages evolved from Latin as drastically as they have?"
or
Explain how the opposition of the Church's tradition paved the way for popular culture of the time to flourish as it did, be it through literature, art, etc..
I think these two are good because they're still exemplifying things that can go on in our world today, making it, therefore, important to understand the answer to this question to be able to account for culture's hindrance or evolution.
1. How did Latin branch out into so many languages, yet still all be very different from each other?
ReplyDelete2. What was the main catalyst that made artists decided to start painting religious portraits in a more lighter depiction?
"Why have Romance languages evolved from Latin as drastically as they have?"
I believe that Romance languages evolved drastically due to the amount of years that passed by and the length of distance between the different languages.
1. Why do we tend to immediately dislike poems that have a negative message instead of giving it a chance and admiring the poet's writing skills?
ReplyDelete2. What were some of the outcomes after the Roman empire fell?
"Why have Romance languages evolved from Latin as drastically as they have"
I think romance languages evolved statically because after the Roman empire a lot of people moved to new places and the people decided to choose another language so they could all interact with one another.
1.What are some noticeable similarities between Italy during the Roman Empire and renaissance era ?
ReplyDelete2.Who was the most influential poet during the middle ages ? why ?
3, How does language create unity and division ?
Language promotes unity because it helps people to comprehend each other regardless of different backgrounds especially in the case of lingua franca . However, language also causes division because there's usually a substratum of languages such as the English language vs. the Patois language which isn't seen as prestigious .
"What are some noticeable similarities between Italy during the Roman Empire and renaissance era ?"
DeleteI like this question because it makes you draw similarities between two time periods a milenia apart. Seeing as we still use democracy that was developed by the greeks over 2000 years ago this should not be impossible.
1. How does translations reinterpret a work of literature? If the poem(s) were read by a native speaker, would they had analyze it based on a cultural perspective or from an emotional perspective?
ReplyDelete2. Latin had remained as the only written language for a long time since dialects only have an oral form. Considering this, how did the written form for these dialects came about, spreading to being used by those who previously use Latin?
"How did Latin branch out into so many languages, yet still all be very different from each other?"
I think that language development are effected by the region and age. The region determine what kind of word they need, with new words created for clarity and specificity, while words that are not used as much are eventually abandoned. The age refers to the fact that the older a language is, the farther it is from the original. As time passed, meanings of a word usually changes and specific words fall out of use.
1. Why are there so many different dialects in Italy? How does geography play a role in that?
ReplyDelete2. How did the Roman Empire affect Europe and the rest of the world?
Why didn't local languages become more commonly used?
ReplyDeleteIn the Dark Ages, why did Latin continue to succeed as the lingua franca of Italy?
How did Latin branch out into so many languages, yet still all be very different from each other?
Though Latin did different from the romans and locals, it was the lingua franca of Italy. The main difference between the Latins was mostly the dialect.
