Write short sentences and use paragraph breaks often. The
reader (you) is put off by a large amount of text where the relevant point
is hidden in a forest of words. Help them out by breaking down your argument
into digestible chunks.
1)
Is there a poem you learned and memorized in school that you still remember?
Does it have some kind of deeper meaning for you?
2) What is the song (as in popular culture's song) that is especially meaningful to you, something that in your opinion combines perfectly music, words and theme to produce a magic effect.
3) Are there foreign languages whose sound irritates you? In NY we hear people talk all the time on the subway, busses, stores etc. Nobody will think that you are biased or intolerant so, be honest.
(I can't stand hip hop, which to me is a language. I hear if from pa systems but it's the same.)
Can you explain what aspects you find especially irritating (I am not talking about the people who speak it, obviously, but the entity, separated from the source.)
4) Is there a particular DIALECT of your first or second language (if you are bilingual) that has the same negative effect on you? (Again, separate speakers from the spoken sound.)
There are honestly no poems that I had to memorize in school that I still remember. I think part of the reason for this is because we often spent a large portion of class going through it to try to understand it. I remember one day in class (I was probably in the 4th grade) that we had to try to understand a poem about light and dark. The teacher gave each group a paragraph to break apart and come up with a good meaning behind it. After that, we put all the meanings together to come up with one overall message about the poem.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite genre of music is modern country music. I love the way the signers sound playing along with instruments. I also love listening to the story lines that a lot of the songs have. Growing up, I spent a lot of time upstate and loved riding and being around horses. I found that country music discusses a large number of topics from romance, to adventure to living on the country side. I think overall, it combined very beautiful aspects of life outside the urban life style, to bring together important parts of life worth mentioning.
There aren't any specific languages that particularly irritate me. I can understand how languages that sound different from someones own can be considered not so pleasant to hear, but personally none bother me. This also has to do with dialect. There is not one that I have experienced that has a negative effect on me.
I had to memorize many poems when I was in elementary school but I honestly do not remember any of them. I remember hating the assignments because the poems were too long and confusing. Still until this day I hate memorizing things and rather try and understand them.
ReplyDeleteI don't have one song that is very meaningful to me. I enjoy different music genres from pop to indie to rock and even country music. Plus today many genres are blended together in one song so sometimes it's hard to tell what genre a song or artist belongs in. I think my favorite songs have to be the once that tell stories and have meaningful lyrics that's why genres are not the first thing I look at. I like when artists have passion and emotion in their songs because that shows that they wrote them and probably went though the experiences that they talk about. Im not a huge fan of repetitive song lyrics that have no meaning to the artist or the listener. I also love when artists use different instruments in their songs especially violins that gives a song a whole new sound.
I don't have a language that irritates me, I think most of the time the tone of how the person is speaking can bother me way more.
I speak Russian also and same thing like any other language I think the way a person is speaking and the tone of their voice will bother me not the language itself.
1. I did not have to memorize any poems in school, although I wish we did. To me, poems are so unique and special and allows your brain to think for itself to create almost a 'definition' for what the poem is saying.
ReplyDelete2. Recently, I heard a song called "We don't have to take our clothes off" by Ella Eyre. She basically sings about a girl who likes a guy but is telling him simply, that they don't need to get naked in order to have a good time. I think it's a beautiful song especially for our generation. With social media being such a huge part of our lives, I feel like sometimes we forget our limits in order to get approval from people. There's no limits we wouldn't push for appreciation and I think we are almost forgetting the importance of life.
3. As a Syrian, who speaks Arabic I really do not enjoy the language. When people speak Arabic I feel as if they are angry. The language requires a lot of throat pronunciation, which sounds very vulgar to me.
4. Yes, I really dislike Syria's dialect of Arabic. I do love the Lebanese dialect of Arabic, I think they are more soft spoken.
1) I have memorized several poems growing up. Unfortunately, it it difficult to recollect these poems today as I had to memorize then recite them weekly to earn a grade. If only I had the opportunity to learn the poems while associating them with pivotal themes of life and without so much emphasis on getting an amazing grade.
ReplyDelete2)The song "Here comes the sun" by the Beatles is very meaningful to me. This song is simply a breath of fresh air. It serves to me as a reminder that there will always be sunshine after periods of rain. Also, the accompaniment of the strings seems to be telling a story-line of someone finally accomplishing a long overdue goal.
3)It is true that many people find different languages unpleasant due to the accents or tones which may often be too aggressive. However, I believe that languages and tones are interconnected and they are essential in capturing a culture.
4) My second language does not really have a negative effect on me. Although, the Haitian language is often very aggressive because it is very expressive. Thus, I find it useful to communicate in Haitian creole to clearly express my thoughts to friends or family . While, I enjoy using french softer tones in formal settings.
The Pledge of Allegiance is the one poem I have learned and memorized to this day. Most people don't think of the Pledge as a poem, but it is. This poem teaches us about the ideals to hold ourselves up to and how to be prideful as Americans.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure this counts as a "popular culture song," but I still really like it. The song is called "Libera Me From Hell" (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT6LFOIofRE), which combines rap and orchestra. The song was used in a show back in 2007 called Gurren Lagann, with one of its central themes being to create a path forward using the past and present as the guide. “Libera Me From Hell” embodies this concept and even the show itself; the orchestra starts off the song while the rap comes in after the fact. Midway and towards the end, the separate entity’s meld and create a great melody, finally ending with the rap by itself. It is a unique song with a simple but powerful message.
I don’t find the sound of any foreign language irritating. Thanks to the diversity of New York, this has never been an issue for me. My parents have a diverse group of friends. Spending time with them has helped expose me to different languages and dialects. Thus I am tolerant and not uncomfortable around them even if I don't understand them.
No dialect irritates me. Everybody has a different way of pronouncing certain words and a particular accent. The thing is, some people don't like to put in too much effort into understanding others if they have specific dialects. Due to the exposure I had since I was young, I am comfortable with and understand those with different dialects and languages even though I don’t speak them.
I have studied about poems throughout middle school, but I have long forgotten them.
ReplyDelete"My Shot," by Lin-Manuel Miranda is a well written song that sings about the life of Alexander Hamilton and beginnings of the American Revolution. It is a great way to learn about the Revolution with a upbeat vibe.
Foreign languages doesn't bother me. When I went traveling in Singapore and there was a multitude of languages at once, I was fine with it.
My second language doesn't affect my first.
1.I don't remember any poems but a couple years ago my older sister helped me improve my native language by making me learn old Urdu and farsi poetry though I haven't been able to memorize one yet.
ReplyDelete2.I really like qawwali music and remixes of old qawwali's by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan because they are very deep and since they are in Urdu, Punjabi and farsi it is difficult for me to understand but once I do the song stays with me for a long while.
3. I don't get irritated by other foreign languages.
4. Since I moved to America when I was 3 years old I didn't quite learn my native languages properly until high school. I really struggle with Punjabi since growing up we had to learn English, Urdu and Punjabi. Since I'm ethnically Punjabi a lot of times I feel uncomfortable speaking in Punjabi infant of other people because I think my pronunciation is really bad and I mix it with Urdu and English.

ReplyDelete1) There are multiple poems that I had to learn and memorize for school but unfortunately I can't remember all of them. The first poems that I had to memorize as a kid were 4 poems about each season. These poems have a deeper meaning to me because I connect them to the memories I had with my family at the time.
ReplyDelete2) A song that is really meaningful to me is Saturday Sun by Vance Joy because it combines perfectly music, words and theme and it reminds me of peaceful summer mornings and it always relaxes me and puts me in a better mood.
3)I personally never got irritated by other foreign languages.
4)One thing that I have been told by my friends is that when I speak Albanian to my parents it sounds like I'm arguing with them but I'm actually not. I think it is because I speak loud and some of the words might seem aggressive if you don't understand the meaning of it.
1. Unfortunately, there aren't any poems that i remember from growing up. I never tried to remember them because this subject wasn't one that interested me.
ReplyDelete2. As of now, there isn't a specific song that is really meaningful to me as I haven't found one that I can relate to. However, I do enjoy all types of genres and languages.
3. I personally don't get irritated by any other foreign languages as I rarely pay any attention to them when they are being spoken in the background.
4. The dialect of my Italian language has zero negative effect on my. I love everything about the dialect.
My favorite poem and song is the itsy bitsy spider. This is because it teaches a valuable lesson. The deeper meaning for me is to keep on trying and climbing even if you are knocked back down over and over again.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite composer is Antonio Vivaldi. He was born in Venice in 1678 and he was considered the greatest of the baroque composers. One of my favorite compositions are the Four Seasons and "LA TEMPESTA DI MARE". There are so many more. Here is a link: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO08sqFJdbY).
An annoying language or tongue I cannot say. I have one in mind but I care not to offend anyone, because it truly bugs me.
I am Puerto Rican and I dislike spanglish. When hear it, I immediately think that the person is uneducated and please forgive me when I say "ghetto".
1. In lower school I memorized the poem "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allan Poe. We had to chose one that was at least a page long to recite in class in front of everyone. It did not have a special meaning to me, it just was a beautiful poem.
ReplyDelete2. At the moment, there is no specific song that has a special meaning to me. I listen to many genres of music, in of which there are many songs that may catch my attention.
3. I do not find other languages irritating. Since we live in NY, the diversity of cultures means the diversity in languages. I have lived here so long that other languages have become a second nature to hearing. I always find it interesting how many people can speak other languages other than english.
4. As someone who speaks a dialect of Italian I can easily say I am proud to know it. It is another language in it of itself. It is completely different from the formal Italian that is taught in schools and it can only be learned by the people in towns themselves. It is sad to see that dialects are becoming more scarce as other languages are becoming more prominent in Europe. Although, the youth at least in the town where I stay in Italy, are re-learning the dialect so it does not die out. I would love to keep it alive because it is a big part of our heritage and culture.
1. I am not familiar with any poems, as there was not a strong urge for me to be well acquainted with them through out school. However my favorite poems would be name poems,as it is a great way to describe someone or yourself.
ReplyDelete2. The perfect song to me would be All of me by John Legend. The song is so soothing to here, it just makes me feel calm and happy. I feel like its meaning speaks to me because I like to appreciate those who are very close to me.
3. A language that irritates me is Italian. The reason why it irritates me is because it sounds so similar to Spanish. It always throws me off, because I can understand it and then suddenly I won't understand some words and I find myself getting annoyed because I am a fluent Spanish speaker so I am familiar with most words. Afterwards, I realize they are speaking Italian and not Spanish.
4.Each Latin-American country has there own form of Spanish. The Spanish that irritates me the most is the Spaniard Spanish. The Spanish they use contains words that other Spanish speaking people don't use, such as vosotros. Everyone else says nosotros, their Spanish dialect just sounds weird to me even though both words mean the same.
1. I can't remember any poems that were important to me.
ReplyDelete2. A great song for me is Linkin Parks "Heavy." This song came out just before the lead singers suicide, and it really talks about the struggles of what depression and anxiety like are on a daily basis. Some of the lyrics are "I don't like my mind right now, stacking up problems that are so unnecessary." And "Why is everything so heavy?... I keep dragging around whats bringing me down, if I just let go I'd be set free." Me having my fair share of depression, this really speaks to me and cuts pretty deep into the bone.
3. If I had to say one language in particular, it would probably be German. Something about that language just sounds very angry.
4. not really. The other dialects just kind of sound like gibberish, as I cannot understand the languages.
1-I did learn a few poems in school, but I didn’t memorize them. I just remember
ReplyDeletea poem called “Try Again.” I remember the meaning of the poem since it is to
motivate people to never lose hope and keep trying until they succeed. I feel it
was a little poem but had a very meaningful message for the society.
2-I don’t have a specific song that is meaningful to me because I keep switching to new ones. However, I like the national Sufi songs a lot because they reflect so much about the culture. Also, “Qawwali” is also very much popular in Pakistan due to its connection to the culture and people there.
3-The only language that irritates me sometimes is “Bengali.” The reason is because firstly Bengali people can understand my language, but I can’t understand them. Second reason is that it is very fast language and even if I try to pick up a few words, I can’t.
4-I speak Urdu, Punjabi and English. I didn’t have any issues with the dialects of my first language but yes sometimes when I am speaking in English, I do mess up the “W” and “V” words a lot. I tried fixing it but I guess that’s when the culture jumps in because no matter how many times I try I will still these words wrong.
In high school I was in a poetry recitation completion so I had to memorize a few poems. The one I remember the most is "There Are Birds Here" by Jamaal May.
ReplyDeleteIn that poem, Jamaal was talking about his hometown of Detroit and how though outsiders viewed the city as a wasteland, to him it was beautiful and reminded him of happy times. Reminds me of how growing up in Brooklyn people thought it was all the ghetto but I couldn't see myself anywhere else because it's where I'm from and now its the place to be/move to.
My favorite meaningful songs are Mississippi Goddamn (Nina Simone) and Forbidden Knowledge (Raury). Not sure if the music makes it anymore meaningful for me. To me, the lyrics in these songs demonstrate issues of that time and how black people struggled, and still do struggle, to overcome them.
I don't really find a language irritating but I do find some overbearing personalities annoying.
My family speaks English with a Bajan accent but since I grew up around it for so long I don't really hear it. I do have Jamaican family that speaks Jamaican Patios which I don't speak so that gets annoying.
There wasn't any English poem that I remember specifically memorizing, but in elementary school there was a Chinese classic that we had to recite every morning. It is practically impossible to memorize since it is literally a whole book, but it contains Confucius teachings that emphasize on goodness of mankind and teach how to maintain relationships with other people.
ReplyDeleteI listen to a wide variety of music but there was no specific song that have a meaningful message for me.
There are no foreign language that irritates me. Electronic rock is a genre that I actually like but for some reason make me experience a feeling similar to motion sickness when listened for loo long.
There are no dialect that irritates me.
I don't have a specific poem that i remembered ever, but i have remembered the opening of the hiku roses are red violets are blue. I like this poem because there are so many variations of it, however only ever changing the last line.
ReplyDeleteI dont have a favorite song that has lyrics but i do like instrumental songs that have very flowy beats. Most put me in a mood of doing things like work or even resting/powernaping.
A language that irritates me is German. It sounds so angry and when i was in Germany Hamburg last summer. On so many occasion i felt like people were talking dirty about me even though i didnt even understand them. It just sounds dirty and angry.
hello
ReplyDelete1. A poem I remember from high school was called "Risk." I remember this poem because it talks about how if you don't take risks in life and just hold on to the thought of doing, it will hurt you more than actually taking the risk.
ReplyDelete2. I don't have a specific song that is meaningful to me but a song that brings lots of memories is "Burning Love" by Elvis Presley. This song brings a lot of memories of when I was a child when my mom would cook or clean and play a lot of Elvis music, also when I would watch Lilo & Stitch.
3. A language that I find irritates me the most in Arabic. Whenever I hear people speak this language they always sound like they are angry. Also, it always sounds like they are about to vomit or spit while talking.
1. I do not remember any poem that I memorized in school.
ReplyDelete2. One of my favorite songs is 'Drive and Disconnect' by Nao because it highlights that in order to escape from chaos and problems, you should disconnect with everything and focus on yourself. The song has a nice beat and the lyrics are easy to remember.
3. I do not find any foreign languages irritating. In fact, I find them beautiful especially because they highlight each person individually.
4. I do not find any particular dialect of Urdu having any negative effect on me.
